1. Preparation of Hides
- Raw animal hides (from cows, goats, sheep, or camels) are first cleaned of flesh and fat.
- They are then soaked in vats of water and lime to loosen the hair and any remaining tissue.
- Workers scrape the hides by hand using curved knives to remove all hair and impurities
4. Drying
- Once dyed, the hides are spread out on rooftops or open terraces to dry in the sun.
- This drying process can take several days, depending on the weather and thickness of the leather.
5. Finishing
- The dried hides are softened again by kneading or treating with natural oils (like argan or olive oil).
- Finally, the leather is cut, polished, and crafted into various goods — bags, shoes, belts, poufs, and more.
2. Softening and Cleaning
- After liming, the hides are placed in pigeon droppings mixed with water (yes — an ancient natural method).
- The droppings contain ammonia, which softens the leather and helps remove lime residues.
- Workers knead the hides in this mixture with their feet for hours until they become supple and flexible
3. Dyeing
- Cleaned and softened hides are moved to stone vats filled with natural dyes.
- Traditional dyes are made from plants and minerals, for example:
Poppy flowers → red
Indigo → blue
Saffron → yellow
Henna → orange
Mint → green
- The hides soak for several days, absorbing the colors, while workers stir and turn them regularly
